By Habtamu Kebede (January 12, 2024): A significant number of ethnic Amhara civilians have endured atrocities solely based on their identity. The Amhara people have been targeted, displaced, and subjected to arbitrary killings by various armed groups, leaving them with valid reasons to fear for their safety and survival. This has led to the formation of FANO, a popular movement dedicated to safeguarding and defending the Amhara people who have been victimized by these groups, including the ruling regime. FANO was founded by ordinary Amhara civilians in recent years and takes action to protect and defend Amhara communities across the country.
On the contrary, the Abiy Ahmed regime has actively pursued and promoted a hegemonic ideology known as Oromuma, which aims to dominate and control all aspects of Ethiopian society. The regime has adopted an alien prosperity gospel agenda in an attempt to alter and destroy the social fabric that has bound the people of Ethiopia for centuries. To make matters worse, the Ethiopian regime, led by the infantile and infamous dictator Abiy Ahmed, has intentionally added fuel to the fire by inciting violence against civilians, particularly the Amhara people. The regime views the Amhara as threats and deliberately attempts to destabilize, disenfranchise, and attack them in order to maintain power and prevent any formidable resistance to its dictatorship.
The TPLF regime, which ruled the country with an iron fist, was not any better than their puppet successor, Abiy Ahmed. Both were authoritarian and responsible for ethnic tensions. In fact, they were the culprits behind the spread of ethnic hatred and animosity, as they were the masterminds behind imposing a constitutional decree that recognized and constitutionalized secession of regions/states. During their reign, the TPLF not only suppressed and killed ethnic Amharas in great numbers, but they also depicted the Amhara people, regardless of their socioeconomic status and political class, as the culprits for every problem the country faced and continues to suffer from.
However, Ethiopians are acutely aware of the divide between the oppressive ruling elite and the general population, and prioritize unity based on equality. Despite the efforts of the TPLF and its predecessor, the Prosperity regime, to incite ethnic tensions, the people of Ethiopia have maintained their interdependence and coexistence. They worship the same God in shared religious institutions and recognize their commonalities. This is evident in the unwavering support of Gondar residents for Oromo politicians like Bekele Gerba, who declared, “The Oromo blood is our blood.” Furthermore, the FANO forces recently rescued former Tigrian military officers from Abiy Ahmed’s prison and provided them with care and a safe passage to their birthplace, Tigray.
Moreover, an estimated millions of Ethiopians (some sources claim half of the population) come from multiethnic families. In fact, reliable estimates suggest that their numbers surpass those of individuals who claim to be from one ethnic group. Despite being silenced, they are determined to actively fight for their rights and voices to be heard in a unified and democratic nation. This determination is evident in their unwavering support for a unified and democratic nation.
As predicted by many, the FANO movement, a popular Amhara armed force, serves to protect and defend the Amhara people from violent attacks by the regime. Additionally, the movement is dedicated to preserving the unity and national sovereignty of Ethiopia, in contrast to the regime’s false promises of prosperity while giving away large tracts of Ethiopian territories to both the north and South Sudan. It is imperative for all Ethiopians, regardless of their ethnicity or belief system, to fully support and stand behind the FANO movement. There are no ambiguities or contradictions between defending the Amhara people and preserving the unity and territorial integrity of Ethiopia.
There is no doubt that both the previous and current regimes have exclusively targeted ethnic Amharas and committed atrocities that amount to ethnic cleansing and genocide. However, their ultimate objective is to destroy the social fabric that binds Ethiopians together and ultimately eradicate the essence of unity and brotherhood. As a result, they have waged and incited war against every ethnic group and between various ethnic groups. Unsurprisingly, even fair minded ethnic Oromos who do not agree with their hegemonic ideology and savagery are not immune from the wrath of the brutal regime.
Therefore, it is crucial for every Ethiopian citizen to strive for a unified approach that prioritizes promoting equal rights and opportunities for all citizens. In addition, fostering a strong sense of national unity and promoting democratic values and principles are also essential. To this end, I would like to express my sincere gratitude and appreciation to the Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Party (EPRP) for their sacrifices in fighting for equal rights and democracy over the past five decades, as well as their unwavering support for the popular FANO movement.
